Read the latest quarter with care. States file late, so recent figures tend to rise. Some states, including California and North Carolina, also stopped covering GLP-1s for weight loss in late 2025 or 2026.

By state, 2025

The rate is prescriptions per 1,000 people enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP. States differ mainly in whether their Medicaid programme covers GLP-1s for weight loss or only for diabetes. Click a column to sort.

How we built this

Medicaid figures come from CMS's State Drug Utilization Data, which counts every outpatient prescription a state Medicaid programme paid for, by drug package. We added up every GLP-1 package: Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, Zepbound, Trulicity, Victoza, Saxenda, Byetta, Bydureon, Adlyxin and generic liraglutide and exenatide. Both fee-for-service and managed-care claims are included.

  • The national line uses CMS's own national totals. State totals leave out rows CMS hides to protect privacy (fewer than 11 prescriptions), so small states run slightly low.
  • Enrollment is Medicaid and CHIP enrollment for June 2025, from CMS's monthly enrollment reports.
  • A prescription can cover one to three months, so prescriptions are not the same as people.
  • Medicaid covers about a fifth of Americans. These figures leave out private insurance and cash buyers, including compounded GLP-1s.

Medicare figures come from CMS's Part D Spending by Drug data, the latest year CMS has released. Spending is before manufacturer rebates, which CMS does not publish by drug. People cannot be added across brands, because one person can take two. Part D did not cover GLP-1s for weight loss alone in these years, which is why Wegovy and Zepbound are small.
