Mechanism (proposed)Reviews report a proposed mechanism involving nitric oxide synthase, dopamine regulation and VEGF-receptor pathways, which researchers propose drive granulation tissue and collagen formation. An independent group reported that BPC-157 upregulates VEGFR2 and activates VEGFR2-Akt-eNOS signalling in animal and in vitro models. This is a proposed mechanism drawn from preclinical work, not a demonstrated pathway in humans.Acts on the pituitary to release the body own growth hormone rather than supplying growth hormone directly, so somatostatin feedback stays intact and release remains pulsatile. That is a genuine pharmacological difference from injected growth hormone, and it is a mechanism claim rather than an outcome.

Key risks
  • No long-term human safety data exist. Reviews report few adverse reactions in animal models, but absence of reported harm in rodents is not evidence of safety in people.
  • FDA states that compounded drugs containing BPC-157 may pose a risk for immunogenicity for certain routes of administration and may have complexities with regard to peptide-related impurities and active pharmaceutical ingredient characterization, and that it has identified no, or only limited, safety-related information for the proposed routes.
  • No human half-life has been established, so there is no evidence-based basis for any dosing interval. Rat half-life figures circulate in secondary sources; we could not verify a primary source for them and do not publish them.
  • Prohibited at all times in sport (WADA S0). One of the reviews cited on this page states BPC-157 is not banned by WADA; that statement is incorrect as of the 2026 list.
  • Prohibited in sport at all times as a growth hormone releasing factor, and USADA states a therapeutic use exemption is highly unlikely to be approved.
  • USADA names oedema of the arms, legs and face, joint and nerve pain, and growth-hormone-excess-driven insulin resistance; with chronic GH excess, hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy and potentially cardiomyopathy.
  • The studied doses are weight-based and paediatric. The fixed adult doses circulating commercially are a different regimen, not a scaled version of the studied one.
  • Black-market supply adds contamination and mislabelling risk on top of everything above.
