Hydrolysate and undenatured type II collagen are different things used at very different doses. None of it substitutes for diagnosis or treatment of joint disease.

What “collagen for joints” usually means
Most consumer products are hydrolyzed collagen (collagen peptides): broken into smaller peptides for oral use. A different product class - undenatured type II collagen - appears in some joint trials and should not be mixed up with multi-gram collagen peptide scoops. Food-derived collagen peptides do appear in the human body after ingestion; that is absorption biology, not proof of a joint outcome. Sato 2017 - Sato K. A 24-week study of collagen hydrolysate in activity-related joint pain is one of the more frequently cited joint papers in the category. - Product identity - hydrolysate vs undenatured type II vs blend.
- Dose and duration - match the label to the protocol, or admit they differ.
- Endpoints - pain scales, function scores, imaging (rare).
- Funding and authors - common in this category; disclose, do not dismiss automatically, do not ignore.
- Population - athletes with activity-related pain ≠ severe radiographic OA.
