Oral Peptides: Which Work as Capsules or Pills, and Why Most Don't
Most peptides are digested before they reach the blood. Which oral peptides, peptide pills and capsules work, why oral semaglutide does, and what the rest show.
The short version
Most peptides are broken down in the gut like any other protein, so few work as pills. The ones that do have a specific reason. Oral semaglutide carries an absorption enhancer, and still only about 0.4% to 2% of each dose reaches the blood. Collagen is absorbed partly as small fragments. Several products sold beside peptides, such as MK-677, are small molecules, not peptides. For research peptides sold as capsules, including BPC-157, KPV and GHK-Cu, I found no human study of them taken by mouth.
- Gut enzymes and the gut wall stop most peptides. In one human study, judged by its growth hormone effect, hexarelin was 77% bioavailable under the skin and 0.3% by mouth.
- Approved oral peptides either carry an absorption enhancer and a much bigger dose, like oral semaglutide, or work inside the gut, like linaclotide.
- Collagen, glutathione and the NAD+ precursors have human trials by mouth. NR, NMN, MK-677 and orforglipron are not peptides.
- For BPC-157, KPV, GHK-Cu and TB-500 capsules I found no human study by mouth. The oral evidence is in rodents, or missing.
Most oral peptides don’t work as pills. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, and the gut digests it like any other protein before much reaches the blood. The few peptide pills that work have a specific reason.
The exceptions fall into four groups:
- Approved drugs built for the gut. Oral semaglutide carries an absorption enhancer. Linaclotide works inside the gut and never needs to be absorbed.
- Supplements with human data. Collagen peptides reach the blood, and glutathione raises blood levels, in human studies. So do the NAD+ precursors NR and NMN, which are not peptides.
- Rebuilt peptides. Dihexa is a peptide fragment changed so it survives being swallowed. It has been tested in rats only.
- Small molecules grouped with peptides. MK-677, tesofensine and orforglipron are not peptides, and each has been given to people by mouth.
For BPC-157, KPV, GHK-Cu and TB-500 capsules, I found no published human study of them taken by mouth. Products and prices below come from each seller’s own page on 3 October 2026.
Why most peptides fail as pills
Bioavailability is the share of a dose that reaches the bloodstream. For most peptides taken by mouth it is close to zero.
Two things stand in the way. Gut enzymes break peptides apart, and the gut wall lets very little through Buckley 2018 - Buckley ST, Bækdal TA, Vegge A et al. Transcellular stomach absorption of a derivatized glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. Sci Transl Med. 2018;10(467)., in the references below. A review of oral peptide drugs lists the main workarounds: absorption enhancers, gut-enzyme blockers, and carrier peptides that cross mucus or cells Drucker 2020 - Drucker DJ. Advances in oral peptide therapeutics. Nat Rev Drug Discov. 2020;19(4):277-289., in the references below.
Two human studies show the size of the gap:
- Hexarelin. In 12 healthy volunteers, this six-amino-acid growth hormone releaser was 77% bioavailable under the skin, 4.8% through the nose and 0.3% by mouth. The figures come from the growth hormone each dose released. The oral doses were 20 and 40 mg. The injected doses were 1.5 and 3 micrograms per kilogram Ghigo 1994 - Ghigo E, Arvat E, Gianotti L et al. Growth hormone-releasing activity of hexarelin, a new synthetic hexapeptide, after intravenous, subcutaneous, intranasal, and oral administration in man. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1994;78(3):693-8., in the references below. More: hexarelin.
- Melanotan-I. In 3 men, no drug was detectable in the blood after oral doses. Under the skin it was fully absorbed and tanned the skin Ugwu 1997 - Ugwu SO, Blanchard J, Dorr RT et al. Skin pigmentation and pharmacokinetics of melanotan-I in humans. Biopharm Drug Dispos. 1997;18(3):259-69., in the references below. More: Melanotan 1.
Even with an absorption enhancer, little gets through. One review puts oral bioavailability with standard enhancers at around 1%, low and variable. Its authors say this has led to a view that only potent peptides that are affordable to make are realistic pill candidates Brayden 2020 - Brayden DJ, Hill TA, Fairlie DP et al. Systemic delivery of peptides by the oral route: Formulation and medicinal chemistry approaches. Adv Drug Deliv Rev. 2020;157:2-36., in the references below.
The oral peptides that work, and why
Oral semaglutide: an absorption enhancer and a bigger dose
Semaglutide is sold as a pill under three brands: Rybelsus, Ozempic pill and Wegovy pill. Each tablet contains an absorption enhancer, salcaprozate sodium (SNAC). In studies by Novo Nordisk scientists, semaglutide was absorbed in the stomach, close to the tablet. SNAC shielded it from enzymes and briefly helped it cross the stomach lining Buckley 2018 - Buckley ST, Bækdal TA, Vegge A et al. Transcellular stomach absorption of a derivatized glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. Sci Transl Med. 2018;10(467)., in the references below.
It still absorbs poorly. The tablet label puts bioavailability at about 0.4% to 1% for Rybelsus and 1% to 2% for Ozempic tablets. So the oral dose is much bigger. In people without type 2 diabetes, the Wegovy pill’s 25 mg a day gives blood levels its label predicts are comparable to a 2.4 mg injection once a week. Levels vary more from person to person on the pill.
That is also why the routine is strict. The label says to take the tablet on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water. Then wait at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other pills. In one label study, a tablet taken with 50 mL of water was absorbed better than one taken with 240 mL. More: oral semaglutide and Rybelsus.
Octreotide: the same trade-off
Octreotide, a lab-made peptide that mimics the hormone somatostatin, is also sold as an enteric-coated capsule, Mycapssa. It is approved for long-term acromegaly treatment in people who have already responded to octreotide or lanreotide. Its label shows the cost of the oral route. In healthy people, one 20 mg capsule gave similar total exposure to a 0.1 mg injection under the skin.
Linaclotide: it never leaves the gut
Linaclotide (Linzess) is a 14-amino-acid peptide taken as a capsule for constipation-type irritable bowel syndrome and chronic constipation. Its label says it is minimally absorbed, with blood levels too low to measure. It doesn’t need to be absorbed, because it acts on the surface of the gut lining.
Some research peptides may work the same way, if they work by mouth at all. The oral KPV and BPC-157 studies in rodents tested gut inflammation and gut or liver injury, where a peptide could act without reaching the blood. KPV, a three-amino-acid peptide, was taken up by PepT1, a transporter for small peptides in gut cells. Added to drinking water, it reduced colitis in mice Dalmasso 2008 - Dalmasso G, Charrier-Hisamuddin L, Nguyen HT et al. PepT1-mediated tripeptide KPV uptake reduces intestinal inflammation. Gastroenterology. 2008;134(1):166-78., in the references below. The comparison with linaclotide is my own reading; those studies did not test it.
Collagen and glutathione: supplement peptides with human trials
Collagen supplements are digested into amino acids and small fragments, and some fragments survive. Food-derived collagen peptides reach micromolar levels in human blood, far above the nanomolar levels often found for other bioactive food peptides. One of them, Pro-Hyp, boosted the growth of skin cells called fibroblasts in lab studies Sato 2017 - Sato K. The presence of food-derived collagen peptides in human body-structure and biological activity. Food Funct. 2017;8(12):4325-4330., in the references below.
The trial evidence is real but modest. A meta-analysis of 19 randomized trials of oral and topical peptides for skin ageing, in 1,341 people, found improved hydration and brightness. Its small effect on wrinkles came mainly from oral products Nukaly 2026 - Nukaly HY, Halawani IR, Irtaza HM et al. Oral and topical peptides for skin aging: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Front Med (Lausanne). 2026;13:1618306., in the references below. Details: collagen peptides.
Glutathione is a three-amino-acid peptide your cells make. In a 6-month randomized trial in 54 adults, 250 or 1,000 mg a day by mouth raised glutathione in blood and red cells. The higher dose also raised it in plasma and lymphocytes. Levels returned to baseline a month after stopping Richie 2015 - Richie JP Jr, Nichenametla S, Neidig W et al. Randomized controlled trial of oral glutathione supplementation on body stores of glutathione. Eur J Nutr. 2015;54(2):251-63., in the references below. The trial measured body stores, not a health outcome. Details: glutathione.
Rebuilt peptides, and molecules that aren’t peptides
Chemists can also change a peptide until it survives the gut. Dihexa began as a three-amino-acid fragment of an angiotensin IV analogue, a brain-active peptide. Its developers modified it to resist breakdown and reported it as orally active, from rat studies McCoy 2013 - McCoy AT, Benoist CC, Wright JW et al. Evaluation of metabolically stabilized angiotensin IV analogs as procognitive/antidementia agents. J Pharmacol Exp Ther. 2013;344(1):141-54., in the references below. The journal later published a notice of concern about that paper Anon 2021 - Anon. Notice of Concern: McCoy AT, Benoist CC, Wright JW, Kawas LH, Bule-Ghogare JM, Zhu M, Appleyard SM, Wayman GA, and Harding JW (2013) Evaluation of Metabolically Stabilized Angiotensin IV Analogs as Procognitive/Antidementia Agents, J Pharmacol Exp Ther, 344: 141-154; DOI: https://doi.org/10.1124/jpet.112.199497. J Pharmacol Exp Ther. 2021;378(3):313., in the references below. I found no human study of dihexa. Details: dihexa.
Several oral compounds often grouped with peptides are small molecules:
- MK-677 (ibutamoren). In older adults, 25 mg by mouth once a day raised growth hormone and brought IGF-1 up to young-adult levels within 4 weeks. It also raised fasting blood sugar Chapman 1996 - Chapman IM, Bach MA, Van Cauter E et al. Stimulation of the growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor I axis by daily oral administration of a GH secretogogue (MK-677) in healthy elderly subjects. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1996;81(12):4249-57., in the references below. Details: MK-677.
- Tesofensine. In a pharmacokinetic analysis of 320 people with Alzheimer’s disease dosed by mouth, its half-life was about 234 hours Lehr 2007 - Lehr T, Staab A, Tillmann C et al. Neurogan’s GHK-Cu tablets showed a $30 sale price on 3 October 2026. I found no FDA statement on whether GHK-Cu is a lawful dietary ingredient.
On BPC-157, FDA’s July 2026 review lists five published human studies, none by mouth, and found no human absorption data after oral dosing. One registered oral-tablet study in Mexico has posted no results. Full detail: oral vs injectable BPC-157.
Research capsules from the vendors I check
I check three research vendors: Spartan Peptides, Next Level Pharm and BioEdge Research Labs. On 3 October 2026, only BioEdge sold capsules. Spartan and Next Level Pharm sold their peptides as vials. Peptide Decode has no connection to any of them.
| BioEdge product | Per capsule | Price for 60 capsules |
|---|---|---|
| BPC-157 Arginate Salt | 500 mcg | $129 (on sale from $142) |
| KPV | 500 mcg | $109 |
| GHK-Cu | 2 mg | $109 |
| BPC-157 + TB-500 | 500 mcg of each | $149 |
| 5-Amino-1MQ | 50 mg | $145 |
| SLU-PP-332 | 500 mcg | $144 (on sale from $180) |
| Dihexa | 5 mg | $129 |
BioEdge also sold methylene blue capsules (10 mg, 60 for $79), a small molecule this site doesn’t cover.
Each of these pages labels the product “For Laboratory Research Use Only” and “Not for human or veterinary use”. FDA has said a research-use label does not stop a product being a drug when the seller’s websites show it is meant for people. It made that point in a December 2024 warning letter to a different seller, Summit Research Peptides.
Three things to know about these capsules:
- Dose. A 500 mcg BPC-157 capsule holds the top of the common injected dose, 250 to 500 mcg under the skin (common practice, not trial-established). If BPC-157 absorbed like the approved oral peptides, a capsule would deliver far less than an injection. That is my reasoning, and nobody has measured it. BPC-157 may act on the gut directly instead.
- Form. I found no PubMed record of BPC-157 arginate salt, the form in BioEdge’s capsules, so any stability claim for it rests on the seller.
- Identity. BioEdge’s 5-Amino-1MQ capsule page gives a different formula and CAS number (C11H14N2, 1177270-09-6) from its own 5-Amino-1MQ vial page (C10H11IN2, 42464-96-0). Ask which compound the certificate of analysis tested.
The capsule pages say a certificate of analysis is available for each lot. What a real one shows, and how to check it: vendor checklist and my BioEdge Research Labs review.
Approved GLP-1 pills for weight loss
The approved peptide pill for weight loss is semaglutide, sold as the Wegovy pill. In the 64-week trial on its label, 25 mg a day cut body weight by 13.6% on average, against 2.4% on placebo. On 3 October 2026, Novo Nordisk’s self-pay price was $149 a month for 1.5 mg, $199 for 4 mg and $299 for 9 mg or 25 mg. It needs a prescription.
Foundayo (orforglipron) is the other approved GLP-1 pill for weight loss. It acts on the same receptor but is a small molecule, not a peptide. Lilly’s regular self-pay price on 3 October 2026 was $149 to $349 a month, depending on the dose.
I found no tirzepatide pill. On 3 October 2026, every tirzepatide label on DailyMed was for an injection, sold as Mounjaro or Zepbound. More: tirzepatide pills and how GLP-1 medicines work.

Common questions
Do oral peptides actually work?
A few do. Oral semaglutide works because its tablet carries an absorption enhancer, and even then only about 0.4% to 2% of each dose reaches the blood. Collagen and glutathione supplements have human studies showing they are absorbed. For research peptides sold as capsules, such as BPC-157, KPV and GHK-Cu, I found no published human study of them taken by mouth.
Are there any peptides that are taken orally?
Yes. FDA-approved examples are semaglutide tablets (Rybelsus, Ozempic pill and Wegovy pill), octreotide capsules (Mycapssa) for acromegaly, and linaclotide capsules (Linzess), which work inside the gut. Collagen peptides and glutathione are sold as oral supplements. Many research peptides are sold as capsules too, but being sold as a capsule is not evidence that a peptide works by mouth.
What is the best oral peptide?
By human evidence, oral semaglutide. It is FDA-approved, and in the 64-week trial on its label the 25 mg Wegovy pill cut body weight by 13.6%, against 2.4% on placebo. Among supplements, collagen peptides have the most randomized trials, with modest effects on skin. I do not rank research-peptide capsules, because I found no human study of any of them taken by mouth.
What are peptide pills used for?
It depends on the peptide. The approved ones treat specific conditions. Semaglutide tablets treat type 2 diabetes or obesity, octreotide capsules treat acromegaly, and linaclotide capsules treat constipation-type irritable bowel syndrome and chronic constipation. Collagen and glutathione are sold as supplements. Research-peptide capsules have no approved use.
What are the key differences between oral and injectable BPC-157?
Neither the capsule nor the under-the-skin injection has been tested in a published human study. FDA's July 2026 review found no human pharmacokinetic data for BPC-157 after either route. The human studies it found used enemas, injections into the knee or bladder, and an IV infusion. The rat studies it summarised gave BPC-157 by mouth or by injection into the abdomen, in gut and liver injury models. FDA rated the immune-reaction risk of the oral route as likely low, but kept its concern about impurities.
Where can I buy BPC-157 capsules?
Of the three research vendors I check, only BioEdge Research Labs sold BPC-157 capsules on 3 October 2026. It listed 60 capsules of 500 mcg BPC-157 arginate salt for $129, on sale from $142. They are labelled for laboratory research, not human use. Spartan Peptides and Next Level Pharm sold BPC-157 only as vials. Peptide Decode has no connection to any of them. To check any other seller, the vendor checklist on this site covers what to ask for. That means a batch-specific certificate of analysis, purity and identity testing, and a testing lab you can identify.
What is the downside of taking peptides by mouth?
For research peptides, the main downside is that you may absorb little or none, and nobody has measured how much. No regulator checks what is in a capsule labelled for laboratory research. For approved oral semaglutide, the downsides are a strict morning routine and the side effects on its label. The most common are nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, decreased appetite, vomiting and constipation.
What are the best peptide pills for weight loss?
The approved peptide pill for weight loss is semaglutide, sold as the Wegovy pill. Novo Nordisk's self-pay price on 3 October 2026 was $149 to $299 a month by dose. Foundayo (orforglipron) is another approved GLP-1 pill for weight loss, but it is a small molecule, not a peptide. Lilly charged $149 to $349 a month self-pay. Both need a prescription. I found no tirzepatide pill: its labels are all injections.
Do sublingual peptide strips work?
I found no published human study of BPC-157, GHK-Cu, CJC-1295 or PT-141 given as a strip or under the tongue, in a PubMed search on 3 October 2026. Any claim about how well these strips are absorbed is untested.
Will peptides fail a drug test?
In sport, they can. The World Anti-Doping Agency's 2026 Prohibited List bans BPC-157 under S0 and MK-677 (ibutamoren) under S2 at all times. The list names the substances and makes no exception for capsules. Workplace drug panels are covered on my peptides and drug testing page.
What peptides does Joe Rogan take?
The one peptide he has named in a statement I could confirm is BPC-157. On his podcast in July 2021 he said elbow tendonitis was gone within two weeks of starting it. The Associated Press reported the same account in November 2025. Neither source says what he takes now. My Joe Rogan peptides page has the dated sources.
