Best NAD+ Supplement: NR, NMN and Niacin Products Compared

The best NAD+ supplements and pills by human evidence: Tru Niagen (NR) and an NMN at the trial dose, against niacinamide, with prices as of 3 October 2026.

The short version

The NAD+ supplements with the best human evidence are nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). In the first head-to-head trial, 1,000 mg a day of either roughly doubled blood NAD+ in 14 days. Tru Niagen Pro is the NR product that trial used, and an NMN product at the same dose costs less a month. Nicotinamide, the cheapest option, did not sustain a rise. No trial here measured energy, ageing or cognition.

  • NR and NMN at 1,000 mg a day raised blood NAD+ about twofold over 14 days in a head-to-head trial; nicotinamide did not sustain a rise.
  • Tru Niagen Pro is the NR product that trial used. My NMN pick gives the same 1,000 mg dose for less a month.
  • None of these trials measured energy, cognition or an anti-aging outcome. They measured NAD+ levels or a metabolic marker.
  • Side effects were rare in trials of 2 to 10 weeks. Nicotinamide caused a brief homocysteine spike, and high-dose nicotinic acid causes flushing.
  • NMN's US supplement status changed in September 2025, when FDA reversed its 2022 view that NMN was excluded from supplements.

The NAD+ supplements with the best human evidence are nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), at 1,000 mg a day. At that dose, both roughly doubled blood NAD+ over 14 days in the first trial to compare them directly in humans Christen 2026 - Christen S, Redeuil K, Goulet L et al. The differential impact of three different NAD(+) boosters on circulatory NAD and microbial metabolism in humans. Nat Metab. 2026;8(1):62-73., in the references below. Tru Niagen Pro is the NR product that trial used, and my NMN pick gives the same dose for less.

Most “NAD+ supplements” contain a precursor, because NAD+ itself barely survives digestion (what is in NAD+ pills). The body turns NR, NMN or plain niacin (vitamin B3, sold as nicotinic acid or nicotinamide) into NAD+. For the injectable and IV versions, see is NAD+ a peptide? and NAD+ vs peptides.

The best NAD+ supplements, by ingredient

I picked on three things the trials can support:

  • an ingredient with human NAD+ data
  • a dose per serving that matches a trial dose
  • testing the seller states on its own page

Prices come from each seller’s page as of 3 October 2026. None of the product links are affiliate links.

1. Best NR: Tru Niagen Pro 1,000mg

Tru Niagen Pro is the NR product the 2026 trial used, at the same 1,000 mg daily dose Christen 2026 - Christen S, Redeuil K, Goulet L et al. The differential impact of three different NAD(+) boosters on circulatory NAD and microbial metabolism in humans. Nat Metab. 2026;8(1):62-73., in the references below. The 2018 NR trial used the same ingredient, Niagen, at 500 mg twice a day Martens 2018 - Martens CR, Denman BA, Mazzo MR et al. Chronic nicotinamide riboside supplementation is well-tolerated and elevates NAD(+) in healthy middle-aged and older adults. Nat Commun. 2018;9(1):1286., in the references below. Its maker, then called ChromaDex and now Niagen Bioscience, supplied that trial’s capsules and part of its funding.

The 300 mg version costs $49 for 30 capsules, but gives less than a third of the trial dose.

2. Best NMN: ProHealth NMN Pro 1000

ProHealth’s two-capsule serving gives 1,000 mg of NMN, the dose that matched NR in the 2026 trial Christen 2026 - Christen S, Redeuil K, Goulet L et al. The differential impact of three different NAD(+) boosters on circulatory NAD and microbial metabolism in humans. Nat Metab. 2026;8(1):62-73., in the references below. The trial’s NMN came from a supplier the paper names as UltraHealth. ProHealth uses Uthever NMN, made by EffePharm, and says every batch is tested by third-party labs in the US.

At $64.95 for 30 days, it costs $51.05 a month less than Tru Niagen Pro at the same dose.

3. The budget B3 option, ranked last: Thorne Niacinamide

Thorne’s niacinamide (nicotinamide) gives 500 mg per capsule, the dose of the nicotinamide arm in the 2026 trial. That arm did not raise blood NAD+ over 14 days. On day 1 and day 14, a dose also caused a sharp, short-lived rise in blood homocysteine, more than eight times the placebo response Christen 2026 - Christen S, Redeuil K, Goulet L et al. The differential impact of three different NAD(+) boosters on circulatory NAD and microbial metabolism in humans. Nat Metab. 2026;8(1):62-73., in the references below.

At $4.33 for 30 days it is the cheapest product here. On this evidence it is a poor stand-in for NR or NMN. Nicotinic acid, the other form of niacin, is covered in the niacin section below.

NAD+ pills and capsules: what is in them

Most NAD+ pills, capsules and tablets I checked contain NR or NMN, precursors the body turns into NAD+. A few contain NAD+ itself, and I found no human trial showing that swallowed NAD+ raises blood NAD+.

The Supplement Facts panel tells you which one you are buying. On the labels and listings I checked on 3 October 2026, the ingredient line named one of 4 things:

  • Nicotinamide riboside (NR), often sold as Niagen. Life Extension’s “NAD+ Cell Regenerator” capsules are Niagen NR at 100 or 300 mg each (Life Extension’s NAD listing).
  • Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). The same listing sells NMN capsules at 300 mg.
  • Nicotinamide (niacinamide), plain vitamin B3, like the Thorne capsule above.
  • Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), which is NAD+ itself. BulkSupplements’ NAD capsules hold 500 mg each, at $19.96 for 30.

Can you absorb NAD+ from a pill?

Not intact, on the animal evidence. In rats, enzymes in the small intestine split NAD+ into NMN, then NR, then nicotinamide. Nicotinamide was the main, if not the only, form absorbed Gross 1983 - Gross CJ, Henderson LM. Digestion and absorption of NAD by the small intestine of the rat. J Nutr. 1983;113(2):412-20., in the references below. In mice, oral NAD+ raised urinary nicotinamide breakdown products much as oral nicotinamide did Kimura 2006 - Kimura N, Fukuwatari T, Sasaki R et al. Comparison of metabolic fates of nicotinamide, NAD+ and NADH administered orally and intraperitoneally; characterization of oral NADH. J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2006;52(2):142-8., in the references below.

NADH, the reduced form, fared worse in the same mouse study. It produced no rise in those breakdown products. In a test tube, acid at stomach strength quickly turned it into an unidentified compound Kimura 2006 - Kimura N, Fukuwatari T, Sasaki R et al. Comparison of metabolic fates of nicotinamide, NAD+ and NADH administered orally and intraperitoneally; characterization of oral NADH. J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2006;52(2):142-8., in the references below.

I found no human trial that measured blood NAD+ after a dose of NAD+ itself, and no human data on liposomal NAD+. If people handle it the way rats do, an NAD+ capsule mostly delivers nicotinamide. That is the form that did not sustain a rise in blood NAD+ in the 2026 trial Christen 2026 - Christen S, Redeuil K, Goulet L et al. The differential impact of three different NAD(+) boosters on circulatory NAD and microbial metabolism in humans. Nat Metab. 2026;8(1):62-73., in the references below.

Which capsules to buy

The capsules with human NAD+ data are NR and NMN at 1,000 mg a day, the dose in the 2026 head-to-head trial. Tru Niagen Pro and ProHealth NMN Pro 1000, in the table above, give that dose in 2 capsules.

Dose matters. In a trial sponsored by ChromaDex, which supplied the NR, single doses of 100, 300 and 1,000 mg raised blood NAD+ metabolites in step with the dose Trammell 2016 - Trammell SA, Schmidt MS, Weidemann BJ et al. Nicotinamide riboside is uniquely and orally bioavailable in mice and humans. Nat Commun. 2016;7:12948., in the references below.

The direct comparison: NR vs NMN vs nicotinamide vs nicotinic acid

The 2026 trial randomized 65 healthy adults to 14 days of placebo, nicotinamide (500 mg a day), NR (1,000 mg a day) or NMN (1,000 mg a day) Christen 2026 - Christen S, Redeuil K, Goulet L et al. The differential impact of three different NAD(+) boosters on circulatory NAD and microbial metabolism in humans. Nat Metab. 2026;8(1):62-73., in the references below. It was open-label. The authors are employees of Nestlé and of Cryptobiotix, a Belgian research company.

NR and NMN, but not nicotinamide, raised circulating NAD+, by a similar amount: roughly a doubling of whole-blood NAD+ by day 14. Nicotinamide only changed the blood NAD+ profile briefly after each dose.

The trial also ran lab tests in whole blood and with human gut bacteria. Gut bacteria turned part of the NR and NMN into nicotinic acid (NA), the other form of niacin. Added straight to blood, nicotinic acid raised NAD+, while NR, NMN and nicotinamide did not Christen 2026 - Christen S, Redeuil K, Goulet L et al. The differential impact of three different NAD(+) boosters on circulatory NAD and microbial metabolism in humans. Nat Metab. 2026;8(1):62-73., in the references below.

The authors propose that oral NR and NMN work partly through this gut conversion. The trial did not give nicotinic acid by mouth, so it does not show that a niacin tablet matches an NR or NMN capsule.

Nicotinamide riboside (NR): the trial evidence

The most-cited NR trial is a 2018 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study Martens 2018 - Martens CR, Denman BA, Mazzo MR et al. Chronic nicotinamide riboside supplementation is well-tolerated and elevates NAD(+) in healthy middle-aged and older adults. Nat Commun. 2018;9(1):1286., in the references below. Thirty healthy adults aged 55 to 79 took NR for 6 weeks and placebo for 6 weeks, in random order. The dose was 500 mg of nicotinamide riboside chloride, sold as NIAGEN, twice a day.

NR raised NAD+ in blood immune cells (PBMCs) by about 60% compared with placebo, and was well tolerated, with no serious adverse events. The authors flagged blood pressure and arterial stiffness as outcomes for a larger trial; this one did not show a cardiovascular benefit.

Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN): the trial evidence

The most-cited NMN trial is a 2021 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in postmenopausal women with prediabetes who were overweight or obese Yoshino 2021 - Yoshino M, Yoshino J, Kayser BD et al. Nicotinamide mononucleotide increases muscle insulin sensitivity in prediabetic women. Science. 2021;372(6547):1224-1229., in the references below. Thirteen women took 250 mg of NMN a day for 10 weeks, supplied by Oriental Yeast Co., and 12 took placebo.

NMN increased insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and insulin signaling in muscle, and switched on genes tied to muscle remodeling. Body composition, blood pressure and fasting glucose and insulin did not change, and no adverse events were reported. The trial did not include men, or women without prediabetes.

Niacin (nicotinic acid and nicotinamide)

Niacin is vitamin B3, and its two forms behave differently. In the 2026 trial, nicotinic acid was a potent NAD+ booster in blood in the lab, while nicotinamide by mouth did not sustain a rise Christen 2026 - Christen S, Redeuil K, Goulet L et al. The differential impact of three different NAD(+) boosters on circulatory NAD and microbial metabolism in humans. Nat Metab. 2026;8(1):62-73., in the references below.

Nicotinic acid at the high doses long used for cholesterol (hundreds of milligrams to several grams) causes flushing. That means sudden warmth, redness and sometimes itching of the face and upper body, driven by prostaglandin release in the skin. A 2024 review describes flushing as the main reason people stop taking it Javaid 2024 - Javaid A, Mudavath SL. Niacin-induced flushing: Mechanism, pathophysiology, and future perspectives. Arch Biochem Biophys. 2024;761:110163., in the references below. Nicotinamide does not cause it.

Neither the flushing research nor the 2026 trial tested nicotinic acid at the low doses in typical NAD+ products. How much flushing risk applies at those doses is not established.

What is the downside of taking NAD+?

The downsides in the trials were small, but the trials were short:

Is NAD+ really worth taking?

If the goal is a higher blood NAD+ level, NR or NMN at 1,000 mg a day did that in healthy adults over 14 days Christen 2026 - Christen S, Redeuil K, Goulet L et al. The differential impact of three different NAD(+) boosters on circulatory NAD and microbial metabolism in humans. Nat Metab. 2026;8(1):62-73., in the references below. The evidence favors neither over the other, and nicotinamide did not sustain a rise.

If the goal is more energy, slower ageing or sharper thinking, no trial on this page measured those outcomes. The money buys a biomarker change: $64.95 to $116 a month for my picks at the trial dose, as of 3 October 2026.

Regulatory status

US legal status - Dietary supplement

NR and niacin are sold as ordinary dietary supplements, which FDA does not review for safety or effectiveness before market. NMN's status changed twice: FDA excluded it from the dietary-supplement definition in 2022 over its prior investigational-drug authorization, then reversed that determination in letters dated 29-30 September 2025, concluding NMN is not excluded because it finds NMN was marketed as a supplement before that drug investigation began.

No product in any of these three categories carries FDA drug approval for any indication. Supplement status, current or reinstated, does not mean approval. FDA did not review these trials as part of a drug-approval process.

Common questions

Which is better, NMN or NR?

In the first head-to-head trial in humans, NR and NMN at 1,000 mg a day raised blood NAD+ by a similar amount, roughly doubling it over 14 days. No trial has shown that either one does more for energy, cognition or a disease marker. Among my picks, the NMN product at that dose costs less a month than the NR product.

What brand of NAD+ is best?

No brand has been shown to work better than another. Tru Niagen has the most direct trial support for NR: the 2026 head-to-head trial used Tru Niagen Pro, and the 2018 NR trial used the same Niagen ingredient. For NMN, choose a product at a trial dose (250 or 1,000 mg a day) whose seller posts batch test results.

What NAD does Joe Rogan take?

The NAD statement from Joe Rogan I can source is about an IV drip, not a supplement. In an Instagram video in September 2021 announcing he had COVID-19, he said he had taken an NAD drip and a vitamin drip three days in a row. CBS News and Variety reported it. I have no dated source for him naming an oral NAD+ supplement.

Does niacin raise NAD+ as well as NR or NMN?

Not on current evidence. In the 2026 head-to-head trial, nicotinamide taken by mouth did not sustain a rise in blood NAD+. Nicotinic acid, the classic form of niacin, was the strongest NAD+ booster when added to blood in the lab. Gut bacteria turned some of the NR and NMN into it. The trial did not give nicotinic acid by mouth, so whether a niacin tablet matches NR or NMN is untested.

Is niacin the same as NAD+?

No. Niacin (vitamin B3) is a precursor the body uses to build NAD+. It is sold in two forms, nicotinic acid and nicotinamide, and they behave differently. In the 2026 comparison, nicotinamide did not sustain a rise in blood NAD+. Nicotinic acid was a potent booster when tested in blood in the lab.

Is NMN legal in the US?

As of this page's publication, yes, as a dietary supplement ingredient, but that has changed twice. FDA decided in 2022 that NMN was excluded from the dietary-supplement definition because it had first been authorized for investigation as a drug. In letters dated 29-30 September 2025, FDA reversed that position, finding NMN was marketed as a supplement in the US before the drug investigation began. No NMN product carries FDA drug approval either way.

What dose of NR or NMN raised NAD+ in human trials?

The 2026 head-to-head trial gave 1,000 mg a day of NR (Tru Niagen Pro) or NMN for 14 days, and both roughly doubled blood NAD+. The 2018 NR trial used 500 mg of Niagen twice a day for six weeks and raised NAD+ in blood immune cells by about 60% compared with placebo. The 2021 NMN trial used 250 mg a day for 10 weeks and measured muscle insulin sensitivity.

Is a NAD+ supplement the same thing as an NAD+ injection or IV?

No. NR, NMN and niacin are oral precursors sold as dietary supplements. Injectable or IV NAD+ is a different product with its own regulatory picture. No injectable NAD+ product is FDA-approved, and it is generally sold through compounding pharmacies and IV clinics. See is NAD+ a peptide? for that comparison.

Do NAD+ supplements actually work?

For raising blood NAD+, yes: human trials support NR and NMN. For the benefits most often advertised, such as energy, anti-aging and cognition, no trial on this page measured those outcomes. Raising a biomarker is a different claim from producing a benefit you can feel or measure.

Can your body absorb NAD+ from a pill?

Not intact, on the animal evidence. In rats, the intestine broke NAD+ down to nicotinamide, which was the main form absorbed, and in mice oral NAD+ behaved much like oral nicotinamide. I found no human trial measuring blood NAD+ after swallowing NAD+ itself. Most NAD+ pills I checked contain NR or NMN instead, and those did raise blood NAD+ in human trials.
