Rybelsus Price, Dose, Side Effects and the Ozempic Pill Switch

Rybelsus price: Novo is replacing it with Ozempic pill, $149 to $299 a month self-pay on 3 October 2026, or $25 with covering insurance. Dose and side effects.

The short version

Rybelsus is semaglutide, the molecule in Ozempic and Wegovy, as a once-daily tablet made by Novo Nordisk. In the US it is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes. It improves blood-sugar control and lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death in those at high risk. It is taken on an empty stomach with a little water, 30 minutes before food, drink or other pills. Novo Nordisk is replacing it with Ozempic pill, which costs $149 to $299 a month self-pay as of 3 October 2026.

  • Novo Nordisk says Rybelsus is being replaced by Ozempic pill. Switching needs a new prescription.
  • I found no Rybelsus list or cash price. Its savings card offers $25 with covering insurance, and Ozempic pill costs $149 to $299 a month self-pay.
  • Rybelsus is oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes. It shares a label with Ozempic tablets, but their doses are not interchangeable milligram for milligram.
  • It starts at 3 mg daily for 30 days, then 7 mg, with 14 mg if more blood-sugar control is needed.
  • Take it on waking with up to 4 ounces of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or other pills.

Novo Nordisk is replacing Rybelsus with Ozempic pill. On 3 October 2026 I found no Rybelsus list price or cash price on Novo’s pages or TrumpRx. Its savings offer still brings the cost to as little as $25 for people whose commercial insurance covers it. Ozempic pill costs $149, $199 or $299 a month at Novo’s self-pay price, depending on the dose.

Rybelsus is Novo Nordisk’s brand name for semaglutide as a once-daily tablet. In the US it is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes. It improves blood-sugar control alongside diet and exercise. It also lowers the risk of major cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke) in those at high risk for them.

How much does Rybelsus cost?

Novo’s NovoCare site says Rybelsus “is being replaced by Ozempic pill” and that current users need a new prescription to switch. It gives no end date. Novo made Ozempic pill available across the US on 4 May 2026.

The Ozempic pill prices below come from the pages of Novo Nordisk and TrumpRx, checked on 3 October 2026. NovoCare says each Ozempic tablet works like the Rybelsus dose beside it:

Rybelsus doseOzempic pill doseSelf-pay priceList price
3 mg (30-day starting dose)1.5 mg$149 a month$1,027.51 a month
7 mg4 mg$199 a month$1,027.51 a month
14 mg9 mg$299 a month$1,027.51 a month

Novo counts one bottle of 30 tablets as a month. The label’s switching rules are below, under Rybelsus vs Ozempic and Wegovy.

  • With commercial insurance: Rybelsus’s own savings page offers as little as $25 for a 1-, 2- or 3-month prescription, with at most $100 off per month of supply. NovoCare says Ozempic pill will have the same coverage as Rybelsus and that the savings offer carries over to Ozempic, with the same $25 floor and $100 cap. Both offers are for commercially insured patients only.
  • With Medicare: the $50-a-month Medicare GLP-1 Bridge does not list Rybelsus or Ozempic, and excludes people with type 2 diabetes.
  • In 2027: Novo announced on 24 February 2026 that the list price of Rybelsus 7 mg and 14 mg will fall to $675 from 1 January 2027. It says self-pay prices are not affected.

The Ozempic pen costs more self-pay, at $349 to $499 a month: Ozempic cost. The legal ways to get semaglutide online, with prices: semaglutide online.

What is Rybelsus?

Rybelsus comes as 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg tablets. It is the same molecule as the Ozempic and Wegovy injections, in a form taken by mouth. It now shares its FDA label with Ozempic tablets (1.5, 4 and 9 mg), which have the same two approved uses. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children. The molecule across its three brands: semaglutide guide. Every semaglutide pill compared: oral semaglutide.

In its cardiovascular outcomes trial, 9,650 adults with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease were followed for a median of about 49 months. Semaglutide tablets at 14 mg lowered the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke against placebo (hazard ratio 0.86).

The label says Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets are not substitutable milligram for milligram. After the first 30 days, a prescriber can switch between them using the label’s table, starting the new tablet the day after stopping the old one:

RybelsusOzempic tablets
7 mg once daily4 mg once daily
14 mg once daily9 mg once daily

Someone on the 0.5 mg Ozempic injection can move to 7 mg or 14 mg of Rybelsus one week after their last injection. The Wegovy label says semaglutide products should not be combined with each other or with other GLP-1 medicines.

How Rybelsus works

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 analogue. It acts on the GLP-1 receptor to release insulin and lower glucagon when blood sugar is high, and it slows stomach emptying. Its half-life is about a week, and the tablet label says it stays in circulation for about five weeks after the last tablet.

The tablet contains an absorption enhancer (salcaprozate sodium). The label’s studies found more semaglutide was absorbed with less water and a longer fast after the dose, which is why the routine below is strict. More: how GLP-1 medicines work.

Rybelsus dosage

DaysDose
1-303 mg once daily (to start; the label says this dose does not control blood sugar)
31-607 mg once daily
61 onwardStay on 7 mg, or 14 mg once daily if more blood-sugar control is needed

How to take it, per the label:

  • one tablet a day, in the morning, on an empty stomach;
  • with plain water only, up to 4 ounces;
  • swallowed whole - not split, crushed, chewed or dissolved;
  • then at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other oral medicine.

A missed dose is skipped. Take the next one the following day. The dose is the prescriber’s decision. Injected semaglutide schedules: semaglutide dosage.

Side effects and who should not take it

Rates from the placebo-controlled trials of semaglutide tablets in adults with type 2 diabetes:

ReactionPlacebo7 mg14 mg
Nausea6%11%20%
Abdominal pain4%10%11%
Diarrhoea4%9%10%
Decreased appetite1%6%9%
Vomiting3%6%8%
Constipation2%6%5%

Most nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea happened while the dose was being raised. In all, 8% on 14 mg and 4% on 7 mg stopped because of gastrointestinal side effects, against 1% on placebo.

Who should not take it: anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Also anyone with a prior serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or an ingredient in the tablet. The label also:

  • does not recommend it in severe gastroparesis;
  • warns of acute pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and kidney injury after dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea;
  • asks for monitoring in people with diabetic retinopathy;
  • warns low blood sugar is more likely alongside insulin or a sulfonylurea;
  • notes a risk of inhaling stomach contents under general anaesthesia or deep sedation, so tell the care team before any procedure;
  • says to stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.

Rybelsus vs compounded semaglutide

Compounded or “research use only” semaglutide is not Rybelsus. It has not been through the FDA review behind Rybelsus’s label, and FDA has documented dosing errors, counterfeits and unapproved salt forms in that supply. What legally differs: compounded vs branded semaglutide.

Is Rybelsus the same as semaglutide?

Rybelsus’s only active ingredient is semaglutide, the same molecule as in Ozempic and Wegovy. But Rybelsus is one approved product: a tablet with its own strengths, routine and diabetes approvals. Its milligram doses do not line up with the injections or with Ozempic tablets. Other approved peptide medicines: FDA-approved peptides.

Common questions

How much does a 30 day supply of Rybelsus cost?

With commercial insurance that covers Rybelsus, its savings offer brings a 1-, 2- or 3-month prescription to as little as $25 (checked 3 October 2026). The offer takes at most $100 off per month of supply. Novo Nordisk is replacing Rybelsus with Ozempic pill. I found no Rybelsus list price or cash price on Novo's pages or TrumpRx. A 30-tablet bottle of Ozempic pill costs $149 (1.5 mg), $199 (4 mg) or $299 (9 mg) self-pay.

Why is Rybelsus being discontinued?

Novo Nordisk says Rybelsus is being replaced by Ozempic pill, and its first-half 2026 report describes the change as "the re-branding and re-launch of Ozempic pill". I found no other reason in Novo's statements. NovoCare says Ozempic tablets of 1.5, 4 and 9 mg work like Rybelsus 3, 7 and 14 mg, with the same efficacy and safety. Ozempic pill went on sale across the US on 4 May 2026 with the same coverage as Rybelsus. Switching needs a new prescription.

Which is cheaper, Rybelsus or Ozempic?

With commercial insurance that covers them, both can cost as little as $25 a month through Novo Nordisk's savings offers. Without insurance, I found no published Rybelsus price. As of 3 October 2026, Ozempic pill costs $149 to $299 a month self-pay, less than the Ozempic pen at $349 to $499.

Where is the cheapest place to buy Rybelsus?

On 3 October 2026 I found no Rybelsus cash price on Novo Nordisk's pages, and no Rybelsus listing on TrumpRx.gov or Costco Pharmacy. With commercial insurance that covers it, the Rybelsus savings card brings the cost to as little as $25. Paying cash, the Ozempic pill that replaces it cost the same at NovoCare Pharmacy, TrumpRx.gov and Costco: $149, $199 or $299 a month by dose.

What is the generic name for Rybelsus?

Semaglutide, taken by mouth. Rybelsus is Novo Nordisk's brand name for once-daily semaglutide tablets for adults with type 2 diabetes. Ozempic and Wegovy are other brands of the same molecule.

Is Rybelsus as strong as Ozempic?

They are not compared milligram for milligram. The label lets someone on the 0.5 mg weekly Ozempic injection switch to 7 mg or 14 mg of Rybelsus daily. It matches Rybelsus 7 mg to 4 mg of Ozempic tablets and 14 mg to 9 mg. Ozempic injection goes higher, up to 2 mg weekly, so a prescriber chooses the product and dose by how much blood-sugar control is needed.

Is Rybelsus a good weight loss pill?

Rybelsus is not approved for weight loss. Its approvals are for adults with type 2 diabetes. The semaglutide tablet approved for weight management is the Wegovy 25 mg tablet, which in its 64-week trial reduced body weight by 13.6% against 2.4% on placebo. Whether either suits a person is a prescriber's decision.

What should I avoid while taking Rybelsus?

Do not take it with anything but plain water (up to 4 ounces), and wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines. Do not split, crush or chew the tablet, or take more than one a day. The label does not recommend it in severe gastroparesis. Taking it with insulin or a sulfonylurea raises the risk of low blood sugar.

Can I drink coffee while taking Rybelsus?

Not with the tablet. The label says to take Rybelsus with water only, up to 4 ounces. Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking any beverage or taking other oral medicines. After that 30-minute wait, the label places no restriction on coffee.
