Oxytocin Dosage: The Approved Dose and Research IU Range

Oxytocin dosage: the FDA label for injectable oxytocin, and the 18-40 IU intranasal range used in research - never studied for sexual function.

The short version

The only FDA-approved oxytocin dose is an injectable form given by continuous IV infusion in a monitored obstetric setting, titrated by a clinician. It is not a number a person self-administers. Separately, research trials of intranasal oxytocin (an unapproved route) have used single or repeated doses of 18 to 40 IU. Those trials studied autism, obesity and social cognition. None studied sexual function or libido, which is what intranasal oxytocin is sold for online.

  • The approved dose is an IV infusion, titrated by a clinician under continuous fetal and uterine monitoring. It is not a self-administered amount.
  • Intranasal oxytocin has no FDA approval at any dose. Research trials have used single or repeated doses of 18 to 40 IU.
  • None of those trials tested sexual function or libido, so the marketed use has no established dose.
  • Reconstitution or concentration arithmetic for any vial belongs at the dosage calculator, not on this page.

The approved dose is not a self-administered number

US legal status - FDA-approved · prescription only

Injectable oxytocin is FDA-approved for labour induction, augmentation and postpartum bleeding control, given exclusively by continuous IV infusion in a monitored clinical setting. There is no approved intranasal product or dose.

The label says intravenous infusion is the only acceptable way to give oxytocin for labour induction or augmentation. Trained personnel individualise and titrate the rate using an infusion pump, and continuous fetal and uterine monitoring is required throughout. I am not reproducing a titration table. This is a clinician-managed hospital procedure, not a number to look up and self-administer, and it has no bearing on a nasal spray bought online.

Oxytocin doses used in research

Intranasal oxytocin has no FDA approval at any dose. Published research trials have used single doses of roughly 18 to 40 IU. Some protocols used many repeated administrations instead of a single dose MacDonald 2011 - MacDonald E, Dadds MR, Brennan JL et al. A review of safety, side-effects and subjective reactions to intranasal oxytocin in human research. Psychoneuroendocrinology. 2011;36(8):1114-26., in the references below. A trial in youth with autism spectrum disorder, for example, used daily intranasal dosing over 12 weeks of active treatment Anagnostou 2014 - Anagnostou E, Soorya L, Brian J et al. Intranasal oxytocin in the treatment of autism spectrum disorders: a review of literature and early safety and efficacy data in youth. Brain Res. 2014;1580:188-98., in the references below.

What is not established

  • No dose for the marketed use. I found no randomised trials of intranasal oxytocin for sexual function or libido. Any dose quoted for that purpose is not backed by a study I could locate.
  • No dose for indefinite or escalating use. The published safety data describes short-term or fixed-duration research protocols, not open-ended self-dosing or increases beyond what a study tested.
  • No equivalence between the injectable and intranasal routes. The milligram amounts used in an IV infusion do not translate into an intranasal IU dose. The formulations, routes and clinical contexts are different.

Reconstitution arithmetic

Working out concentration or draw volume for a vial is arithmetic, not a health decision, so it is not covered here. Use the dosage calculator.

Who should not use it, and the risks

The approved injectable carries serious risks, which is why it is restricted to a monitored hospital setting. They are excessive uterine contraction, fetal distress, and (particularly with prolonged high-dose infusion) water intoxication and low blood sodium. It should not be used to induce labour electively without a medical indication, and never without continuous fetal and uterine monitoring.

For intranasal use, the research literature reports side effects similar to placebo at the doses studied. There are only isolated case reports of adverse reactions, all linked to misuse or use outside a research protocol MacDonald 2011 - MacDonald E, Dadds MR, Brennan JL et al. A review of safety, side-effects and subjective reactions to intranasal oxytocin in human research. Psychoneuroendocrinology. 2011;36(8):1114-26., in the references below. That is reassuring about the studied range. It says nothing about a dose, frequency or duration no study has tested.

Where to get Oxytocin legally

Oxytocin is an FDA-approved prescription medicine, so the legal route is a licensed prescriber, in person or by telehealth, and a licensed pharmacy.

With a prescription, a compounded oxytocin nasal spray or troche starts at $118 for 10 mL at Bayview Pharmacy (as of 3 October 2026).

Research-labelled oxytocin (not the approved medicine)

These checked vendors sell a research-labelled version. It has not been reviewed by FDA, is labelled not for human use, and is tested only as the seller chooses.

Common questions

What is the approved dose of oxytocin?

Injectable oxytocin is approved for labour induction, augmentation and postpartum bleeding control, given only by continuous intravenous infusion. The label says trained clinical staff individualise the rate and titrate it upward, using an infusion pump, under continuous fetal and uterine monitoring. There is no fixed milligram or IU number a patient takes on their own.

What dose is used in intranasal oxytocin research?

Published trials of intranasal oxytocin have used 18 to 40 IU per administration, mainly as single doses. Some protocols repeated the dose over many sessions. Researchers used that range in autism, obesity and social-cognition studies. It is not an established dose for any other use.

What dose of oxytocin is used for libido or sexual function?

None is established. I could not find a randomised trial of intranasal oxytocin for sexual function or libido at any dose. A number a vendor gives for that purpose is not backed by a study I could locate.

Is a higher intranasal dose safer or more effective?

The published safety literature covers single or short-term repeated doses of 18-40 IU under research supervision. It reports side effects similar to placebo in that setting. It says nothing about indefinite self-dosing, raising a dose beyond what a study used, or combining oxytocin with other substances. None of that has been studied.
