GHRP-2: Benefits, Dosage, Side Effects and Legal Status
GHRP-2: how it works, the common dose, what human studies measured, FDA-flagged side effects and the WADA ban. Approved only in Japan, as a diagnostic test.
The short version
GHRP-2 is a synthetic growth hormone releasing peptide sold as a research chemical, mostly for muscle. Its only approval is in Japan, as a diagnostic test of growth hormone release. FDA has flagged it for safety risks in compounding, and it is banned in sport at all times. Human studies measured growth hormone, appetite and other hormones; none shows it builds muscle.
- Not FDA-approved for anything; DailyMed has no label for it. Its only approval is in Japan, as a diagnostic test of growth hormone release.
- FDA lists GHRP-2 in Category 2 of its compounding safety-risk policy, citing reports of serious adverse events.
- Banned at all times in sport - named explicitly as GHRP-2 (pralmorelin) by WADA.
- In human studies it increased appetite and raised prolactin, ACTH and cortisol as well as growth hormone.
- No controlled human trial I verified shows GHRP-2 builds muscle.

Dosing: what the diagnostic-test studies used.
GHRP-2 (pralmorelin) is a synthetic peptide in the growth hormone releasing peptide (GHRP) family, the same family as GHRP-6. It is sold as a research chemical, mostly for muscle and growth hormone. It is not FDA-approved for anything, FDA has flagged it for safety risks when compounded, and it is banned in sport at all times.
Its human research goes back to the 1990s. Most of it uses GHRP-2 as a one-off test of how much growth hormone the pituitary can release. The rest are small studies of appetite, other hormones, growth in children and critical illness. None measured muscle, strength or body composition in healthy adults.
Small or uncontrolled human studies. Too little to settle the question either way. Human studies are mostly single-dose diagnostic tests of growth hormone release, plus small studies of appetite, other hormones and growth in children and critically ill patients. None I verified tested muscle, strength or body composition. Regulators add an FDA safety-risk listing for compounding and an explicit WADA ban.
How GHRP-2 works
GHRP-2 switches on the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R1a), which makes the pituitary release growth hormone. It is the same receptor that ghrelin, the body’s hunger hormone, activates Laferrère 2005 - Laferrère B, Abraham C, Russell CD et al. Growth hormone releasing peptide-2 (GHRP-2), like ghrelin, increases food intake in healthy men. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2005;90(2):611-4., in the references below.
That overlap explains why GHRP-2 raises appetite, and human studies confirm it. An infusion under the skin increased how much 7 lean healthy men ate at a buffet by 35.9% compared with saline Laferrère 2005 - Laferrère B, Abraham C, Russell CD et al. Growth hormone releasing peptide-2 (GHRP-2), like ghrelin, increases food intake in healthy men. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2005;90(2):611-4., in the references below. In 19 lean and obese adults, the increase rose with dose Laferrère 2006 - Laferrère B, Hart AB, Bowers CY. Obese subjects respond to the stimulatory effect of the ghrelin agonist growth hormone-releasing peptide-2 on food intake. Obesity (Silver Spring). 2006;14(6):1056-63., in the references below.
GHRP-2 doesn’t act on growth hormone alone. In 6 healthy young adults it also raised prolactin, ACTH and cortisol. The ACTH and cortisol rise was similar to that from corticotropin-releasing hormone Arvat 1997 - Arvat E, di Vito L, Maccagno B et al. Effects of GHRP-2 and hexarelin, two synthetic GH-releasing peptides, on GH, prolactin, ACTH and cortisol levels in man. Comparison with the effects of GHRH, TRH and hCRH. GHRP-2 benefits: what the research shows
GHRP-2 has a firmer human record than most peptides sold alongside it. It releases growth hormone reliably enough that Japan approved it as a diagnostic test.
- Diagnostic test. In the validation study, a single 100 microgram intravenous dose separated 77 healthy adults (mean peak growth hormone 84.6 mcg/l) from 58 patients with growth hormone deficiency (1.36 mcg/l). The authors proposed a 15 mcg/l cut-off Chihara 2007 - Chihara K, Shimatsu A, Hizuka N et al. A simple diagnostic test using GH-releasing peptide-2 in adult GH deficiency. Eur J Endocrinol. 2007;157(1):19-27., in the references below. A study of 56 children with growth disorders found the test worked in them too Asakura 2010 - Asakura Y, Toyota Y, Muroya K et al. Growth hormone response to GH-releasing peptide-2 in children. J Pediatr Endocrinol Metab. 2010;23(5):473-80., in the references below.
- Children with growth hormone deficiency. In 6 children, 8 months of daily injections raised overnight growth hormone, and they grew faster during treatment than before or after. IGF-I did not rise Mericq 1998 - Mericq V, Cassorla F, Salazar T et al. Effects of eight months treatment with graded doses of a growth hormone (GH)-releasing peptide in GH-deficient children. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1998;83(7):2355-60., in the references below.
- Critical illness. In 14 patients with protracted critical illness, 5 days of GHRP-2 infused with TRH raised IGF-I to near-normal levels, compared with 5 days of placebo Van 1999 - Van den Berghe G, Wouters P, Weekers F et al. Reactivation of pituitary hormone release and metabolic improvement by infusion of growth hormone-releasing peptide and thyrotropin-releasing hormone in patients with protracted critical illness. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1999;84(4):1311-23., in the references below.
These are encouraging results in specific medical settings. None measured muscle mass, strength or body composition in healthy adults. Whether GHRP-2 builds muscle, the use it is mostly sold for, has not been tested in a controlled trial, and it is not approved anywhere for that use.
GHRP-2 dosage
The common GHRP-2 dose is 100-300 mcg, 2 to 3 times daily, on an empty stomach, 5 days a week (5 on, 2 off). From a 5 mg vial mixed with 2 mL of bacteriostatic water, 200 mcg is 8 units (0.08 mL) on a U-100 insulin syringe.
No clinical trial has set a dose. Research-community sources describe 100-300 mcg injected under the skin 2-3 times a day on an empty stomach, 5 days on and 2 off, in 8-week cycles with a 4-week break. It is often mixed with CJC-1295 in the same syringe. That is common practice, not a tested dose. Full sourcing: GHRP-2 dosage.
GHRP-2 side effects
The side effects a regulator has named are the ones in FDA’s Category 2 compounding flag. Human studies add the effects below.
Reported in studies
- Increased appetite. In 10 children with growth hormone deficiency taking GHRP-2 by mouth for a year, 7 reported a significant rise in appetite in the first 6 months, though BMI did not change significantly Mericq 2003 - Mericq V, Cassorla F, Bowers CY et al. Changes in appetite and body weight in response to long-term oral administration of the ghrelin agonist GHRP-2 in growth hormone deficient children. J Pediatr Endocrinol Metab. 2003;16(7):981-5., in the references below. Infusions increased food intake in healthy men Laferrère 2005 - Laferrère B, Abraham C, Russell CD et al. Growth hormone releasing peptide-2 (GHRP-2), like ghrelin, increases food intake in healthy men. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2005;90(2):611-4., in the references below.
- Other hormones rise too. In healthy young adults GHRP-2 raised prolactin, ACTH and cortisol as well as growth hormone Arvat 1997 - Arvat E, di Vito L, Maccagno B et al. Effects of GHRP-2 and hexarelin, two synthetic GH-releasing peptides, on GH, prolactin, ACTH and cortisol levels in man. Comparison with the effects of GHRH, TRH and hCRH. Peptides. 1997;18(6):885-91., in the references below.
- None seen in one small study. In 6 children given daily injections for 8 months, the investigators saw no side effects or toxicities Mericq 1998 - Mericq V, Cassorla F, Salazar T et al. Effects of eight months treatment with graded doses of a growth hormone (GH)-releasing peptide in GH-deficient children. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1998;83(7):2355-60., in the references below. That is a very small study, and not in adults.

These are reported for the class as a whole, not measured for GHRP-2 alone. For redness, itching or swelling at the injection site, see injection-site reactions.
Is GHRP-2 legal?
US legal status - Research use only
Sold for laboratory research use only. Not approved by the FDA for human use, and cannot be lawfully marketed as a supplement or a medicine. Products sold this way are not made to pharmaceutical quality standards, and their contents are not verified by anyone.
AU legal status - Not on the ARTG
Not on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, so the TGA has not assessed it for safety, quality or effectiveness. Goods that are not on the ARTG cannot lawfully be supplied or advertised in Australia except through a specific pathway - the Special Access Scheme, an Authorised Prescriber, a clinical trial, or personal importation.
Regulators reach their own conclusions on their own timelines. Where these two disagree, the difference is the point - not an error.
United States
GHRP-2 is not FDA-approved for anything. On 24 September 2026 I searched DailyMed, the National Library of Medicine’s database of FDA drug labels, and found no labels for it. It is not a dietary supplement or a cosmetic, and it is sold as a research chemical labelled not for human use.
FDA lists “Growth hormone releasing peptide-2 (GHRP-2) (for injectable and nasal routes of administration)” in Category 2 of its interim compounding policy, for substances with potential significant safety risks. The listing applies to 503B outsourcing facilities and was added on 29 September 2023. Unlike some peptides, GHRP-2 has not moved to the table of withdrawn nominations; it remains in the active Category 2 table. The adverse events FDA cites are in the side effects section above.
GHRP-2 is reported to be the only GHRP approved anywhere Popławska 2019 - Popławska M, Błażewicz A. Identification of a novel growth hormone releasing peptide (a glycine analogue of GHRP-2) in a seized injection vial. Drug Test Anal. 2019;11(1):162-167., in the references below. Japan’s drug classification lists pralmorelin hydrochloride as a diagnostic agent for testing endocrine function: a one-off test of growth hormone release, not a treatment. The Japanese validation study used a single 100 microgram intravenous dose Chihara 2007 - Chihara K, Shimatsu A, Hizuka N et al. A simple diagnostic test using GH-releasing peptide-2 in adult GH deficiency. Eur J Endocrinol. 2007;157(1):19-27., in the references below.
Sport: banned at all times
I checked the current Prohibited List on wada-ama.org. Under section S2.2, Peptide Hormones and their Releasing Factors, the GH-releasing peptides named as examples are “alexamorelin, examorelin (hexarelin), GHRP-1, GHRP-2 (pralmorelin), GHRP-3, GHRP-4, GHRP-5 and GHRP-6.” Everything in this class is prohibited at all times, in and out of competition.
The list is reviewed every year. Competing athletes should check the current version directly rather than rely on a vendor, a review article or me.
Australia
Australia’s Poisons Standard (the SUSMP, June 2026 instrument) names “pralmorelin (GHRP-2)” explicitly in Appendix D, clause 5, alongside hexarelin, ibutamoren and other growth-hormone peptides. Possessing anything on that list without authority is illegal. That goes further than anything FDA has done, and has no US equivalent. I didn’t check whether GHRP-2 is on the ARTG.
Is GHRP-2 the same as HGH?
No. HGH (human growth hormone, the drug ingredient somatropin) is the hormone itself, given by injection. A DailyMed search on 24 September 2026 returns FDA-approved labels for branded somatropin products, including Genotropin, Humatrope, Norditropin, Omnitrope, Serostim and Zomacton.
GHRP-2 is a different molecule meant to make the body release more of its own growth hormone. It has no FDA-approved label at all. Somatropin is a prescription medicine with approved uses; GHRP-2 is not.
What I did not verify
The one human half-life I could verify is about 0.55 hours, roughly 33 minutes, in 10 children with short stature given a single 1 microgram per kilogram intravenous dose Pihoker 1998 - Pihoker C, Kearns GL, French D et al. Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of growth hormone-releasing peptide-2: a phase I study in children. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1998;83(4):1168-72., in the references below. I found no half-life after injection under the skin in adults.
I also didn’t verify when Japan approved GHRP-2, whether it is still marketed there, or whether it is on Australia’s ARTG.
Related compounds
- GHRP-6: the older peptide in the same GHRP class, separately listed by FDA and separately named by WADA. I haven’t verified a head-to-head comparison with GHRP-2.
- CJC-1295: a GHRH analogue, one of whose two forms has a published multi-day half-life.
- Ipamorelin: a GHRP-family relative whose only controlled human trial was stopped for insufficient efficacy.
None of these three is FDA-approved, and all carry the same WADA ban.

Common questions
Is GHRP-2 FDA-approved?
No. A DailyMed search on 24 September 2026 returned no drug labels for it, and it is sold as a research chemical labelled not for human use. It is reported to be the only GHRP approved anywhere: Japan lists it as a diagnostic agent for testing growth hormone release, not as a treatment.
Is GHRP-2 safe?
That hasn't been established. FDA lists injectable and nasal GHRP-2 in Category 2 of its compounding policy, for substances with potential significant safety risks. It cites reports of increased insulin requirements, death in critically ill subjects, infection and pancreatitis. The listing is a safety flag, not a full safety review, and it doesn't mean GHRP-2 is safe in other respects.
Is GHRP-2 banned in sport?
Yes. WADA names GHRP-2, by its international name pralmorelin, under section S2.2 of the current Prohibited List. It is banned at all times, in and out of competition. Tested athletes should check the current list directly rather than rely on a vendor or on me.
What is the half-life of GHRP-2?
About 0.55 hours, roughly 33 minutes, in a phase I study of 10 children with short stature given a single 1 microgram per kilogram intravenous dose. That is one small study in children. It doesn't tell you how long GHRP-2 lasts after an injection under the skin in an adult.
Does GHRP-2 build muscle?
No controlled human trial I found shows that it does. GHRP-2 makes the pituitary release growth hormone, and the human studies measured that hormone release, appetite and other hormones, not muscle mass or strength. I couldn't verify any of the muscle claims made in its marketing.
What are the side effects of taking GHRP-2?
FDA's compounding flag cites reports of increased insulin requirements, death in critically ill subjects, infection and pancreatitis, plus a risk of immune reactions from clumping and impurities. Human studies add increased appetite and rises in prolactin, ACTH and cortisol. Other effects listed on vendor and forum sites weren't checked against a primary source, so I don't state them as fact.
Does GHRP-2 make you hungry?
Yes, in the studies that measured it. In 7 lean healthy men, a GHRP-2 infusion under the skin raised the amount eaten at a buffet by 35.9% compared with saline, and in 19 lean and obese adults the increase rose with dose. In 10 children taking it by mouth for a year, 7 reported a significant rise in appetite in the first 6 months. It acts on the same receptor as ghrelin, the body's hunger hormone.
What is the difference between GHRP-2 and HGH?
HGH is growth hormone itself, given by injection, and several branded HGH (somatropin) products have FDA-approved labels. GHRP-2 is a different molecule meant to make the body release more of its own growth hormone. It has no FDA-approved label.
What is the usual GHRP-2 dose?
No clinical trial has set one. Research-community sources describe 100-300 mcg injected under the skin 2-3 times a day on an empty stomach, 5 days on and 2 off, in 8-week cycles with a 4-week break, often mixed with CJC-1295. That is common practice, not a tested dose; the dosing page has the sourcing.
What peptide makes you super hungry?
Among the peptides I cover, growth hormone releasing peptides such as GHRP-2 and GHRP-6 are known for raising appetite, because they act on the receptor for ghrelin, the body's hunger hormone. For GHRP-2 this has been measured: infusions increased how much healthy men ate at a buffet. I don't rank which peptide does it most.
What is the brand name of pralmorelin?
Pralmorelin has no brand on the US market. Outside the US it is sold as GHRP Kaken 100 (Kaken Pharmaceutical).
What is the generic name for GHRP Kaken 100?
The generic name for GHRP Kaken 100 is pralmorelin. GHRP Kaken 100 is Kaken Pharmaceutical's brand, approved for diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency (a one-off stimulation test, not a treatment). It is not approved in the US.
