Buy Liraglutide: Prescription Prices and Research Vials Compared

Checked, not rated · Updated 3 October 2026

You need a prescription to buy liraglutide legally in the US. With one, a 2-pen box of generic liraglutide costs $133.58 with a TrumpRx.gov coupon (as of 3 October 2026).

Research vendors also sell research-labelled liraglutide, which is not the approved medicine.

Research-labelled liraglutide (not the approved medicine)

A research-labelled liraglutide vial is not Victoza, Saxenda or the generic, which come as prefilled pens with a label dose. It is a powder of unverified content that FDA has not reviewed. FDA's GLP-1 warning page names semaglutide, tirzepatide, retatrutide, survodutide and mazdutide among products falsely sold 'for research purposes', not liraglutide, and none of the 17 peptide-seller warning letters I checked names it. FDA's position that research-use-only labels don't stop a product being a drug for human use still applies.

Compared with the approved medicine, a research vial has not been reviewed by FDA, is labelled not for human use, and is tested only as the seller chooses.

The checklist results come from my review of each vendor and cover the whole store. A vendor can publish COAs for some products and not others.

What a research liraglutide COA should show

A certificate of analysis (COA) is the lab report for one batch. For liraglutide, check these:

  • Identity by mass spectrometry, with the expected and the measured mass side by side. For liraglutide, expect about 3,751 Da (C172H265N43O51); the sequence is 31 amino acids, HAEGTFTSDVSSYLEGQAAKEFIAWLVRGRG.
  • Purity by HPLC for this batch, shown as a chromatogram as well as a percentage.
  • A lot number that matches your vial or pack, the test date and the lab's name, so you can confirm the certificate on the lab's own site.

A purity figure does not cover sterility or bacterial endotoxins; a COA covers those only if it reports separate tests for them. Line by line: how to read a peptide COA.

Red flags when buying research liraglutide

  • A research vial presented as the approved medicine, or sold to you as a treatment.
  • No certificate of analysis for the batch you will receive, or one without a lot number or a named lab.
  • Dosing instructions or treatment claims for people on the product page.
  • An FDA warning letter naming the seller. Search fda.gov before you pay.
  • No way to pay with buyer protection, such as a credit card.

Common questions

How much does generic liraglutide cost?

As of 3 October 2026, TrumpRx lists generic liraglutide (for Victoza) at $133.58 for a box of two 18 mg/3 mL pens and $184.41 for three, against list prices of $320.83 and $447.90. Cost Plus Drug lists a box of two at $87.80 plus $55 refrigerated shipping, but marked it out of stock.

Is liraglutide covered by insurance?

That depends on the plan. Novo's Saxenda savings card lets eligible patients pay as little as $25, or save up to $200, per prescription for up to 12 months, and NovoCare lists Saxenda's list price at $1,349.02.

Who qualifies for liraglutide?

Saxenda is approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, some adults with overweight and a weight-related condition, and children 12 and older with obesity who weigh more than 60 kg. Victoza is approved for type 2 diabetes in adults and children 10 and older, and to cut cardiovascular risk in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Is Saxenda being discontinued?

Yes. Novo Nordisk says it will discontinue Saxenda, with last shipments to wholesalers in late January 2027, because alternatives exist and fewer patients use it, not for safety or quality reasons.

Where can I buy liraglutide?

Legally, only with a prescription. The legal routes I checked: Generic liraglutide at a pharmacy (cash); Saxenda with insurance or the savings card. A 2-pen box of generic liraglutide costs $133.58 with a TrumpRx.gov coupon (as of 3 October 2026). Research vendors also sell research-labelled liraglutide (Next Level Pharm), labelled not for human use; it is not the approved medicine.

Is liraglutide for sale legally?

Only with a prescription. Every version is a prescription medicine; Cost Plus Drug marks generic liraglutide 'Prescription Required'. This is general information, not legal advice.
