How to buy sermorelin legally
US status: No FDA-approved sermorelin is on the market: both GEREF products were discontinued in 2008, and patients now get it as a compounded drug on prescription.
Prescription needed? Yes. Every legal supply is compounded on a prescription; Empower Pharmacy's 503A products need a valid prescription, and its 503B products go only to licensed providers.

Legal routeA 503A pharmacy fills a patient-specific prescription; 503B outsourcing facilities sell only to licensed providers. Empower Pharmacy lists sermorelin but shows no public price.

Research-labelled sermorelin (not a prescription product)
'Research use only' sermorelin is not a pharmacy-compounded prescription: no prescriber is involved and no regulator checks the vial. FDA's December 2024 warning letter to Xcel Research called its 'SERMORELIN' an unapproved new drug despite its 'FOR RESEARCH USE ONLY' labels. Compounded sermorelin has had quality failures too: FDA posted Olympia Pharmacy's 2022 recall of out-of-specification lots, including sermorelin acetate 9 mg vials.
Compared with a compounded prescription, a research vial involves no prescriber or pharmacist, is labelled not for human use, and is tested only as the seller chooses.

What a research sermorelin COA should show
A certificate of analysis (COA) is the lab report for one batch. For sermorelin, check these:
- Identity by mass spectrometry, with the expected and the measured mass side by side. For sermorelin, expect about 3,357.9 Da (C149H246N44O42S); the sequence is 29 amino acids, YADAIFTNSYRKVLGQLSARKLLQDIMSR.
- Purity by HPLC for this batch, shown as a chromatogram as well as a percentage.
- A lot number that matches your vial or pack, the test date and the lab's name, so you can confirm the certificate on the lab's own site.
A purity figure does not cover sterility or bacterial endotoxins; a COA covers those only if it reports separate tests for them. Line by line: how to read a peptide COA.
Red flags when buying research sermorelin
- A research vial presented as a prescription product, or sold to you as a treatment.
- No certificate of analysis for the batch you will receive, or one without a lot number or a named lab.
- Dosing instructions or treatment claims for people on the product page.
- An FDA warning letter naming the seller. Search fda.gov before you pay.
- No way to pay with buyer protection, such as a credit card.
Common questions
Do I need a prescription to get sermorelin?
Yes. No FDA-approved sermorelin is marketed, so every legal supply is compounded on a prescription. Research-chemical vials skip the prescription because they are not sold legally as drugs; FDA called Xcel Research's sermorelin an unapproved new drug in December 2024.
Can a doctor prescribe sermorelin peptide?
Yes, as a compounded drug. Telehealth clinics such as AgelessRx, Sermorelin.com, GOAL.MD and Hone Health prescribe it after an evaluation, and a state-licensed 503A pharmacy makes it. Compounded sermorelin is not FDA-approved.
How much does sermorelin cost per month?

Is sermorelin real HGH?
No. Sermorelin is a fragment of growth hormone-releasing hormone, GHRH(1-29). It prompts the pituitary to release its own growth hormone rather than supplying it.
What are the downsides of taking sermorelin?
Its trials were in children with growth hormone deficiency, and I found no trial in healthy adults for the sleep, fat-loss or anti-ageing uses it is sold for. It is compounded rather than FDA-approved, compounded lots have failed specification, and it is banned in sport at all times.
