You need a prescription to buy semaglutide legally in the US. With one, the Wegovy pill (1.5 mg) costs $149 a month self-pay from Novo Nordisk (as of 3 October 2026).

Research vendors also sell research-labelled semaglutide, which is not the approved medicine.

Research-labelled semaglutide (not the approved medicine)

A research-labelled semaglutide vial is not Wegovy or Ozempic. It is a powder to mix and dose yourself, often sold under a code name ('GLP-1(Sema)', 'Sema GLP-1'), and FDA says unapproved versions skip its review for safety, effectiveness and quality. FDA says it has warned companies selling unapproved semaglutide falsely labelled 'for research purposes' or 'not for human consumption', and urges consumers not to buy them. Its 24 August 2026 letters to Peptide Partners, Peak Performance Peptides, Royal Peptides and NuScience Peptides each named research-sold semaglutide as an unapproved new drug.

Compared with the approved medicine, a research vial has not been reviewed by FDA, is labelled not for human use, and is tested only as the seller chooses.

FDA warning letters cited on this page: Warning letter: Peptide Partners LLC (24 Aug 2026); Warning letter: Peak Performance Peptides (24 Aug 2026); Warning letter: Royal Peptides LLC (24 Aug 2026); Warning letter: NuScience Peptides LLC (24 Aug 2026).

The checklist results come from my review of each vendor and cover the whole store. A vendor can publish COAs for some products and not others. The order is not a ranking.

What a research semaglutide COA should show

A certificate of analysis (COA) is the lab report for one batch. For semaglutide, check these:

  • Identity by mass spectrometry, with the expected and the measured mass side by side. For semaglutide, expect about 4,114 Da (C187H291N45O59).
  • Purity by HPLC for this batch, shown as a chromatogram as well as a percentage.
  • A lot number that matches your vial or pack, the test date and the lab's name, so you can confirm the certificate on the lab's own site.

A purity figure does not cover sterility or bacterial endotoxins; a COA covers those only if it reports separate tests for them. Line by line: how to read a peptide COA.

Red flags when buying research semaglutide

  • A research vial presented as the approved medicine, or sold to you as a treatment.
  • No certificate of analysis for the batch you will receive, or one without a lot number or a named lab.
  • Dosing instructions or treatment claims for people on the product page.
  • An FDA warning letter naming the seller. Search fda.gov before you pay.
  • No way to pay with buyer protection, such as a credit card.

Common questions

Can I just buy semaglutide?

Not without a prescription. Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus are prescription medicines. With one, Novo Nordisk's self-pay price for Wegovy pens is $199 a month for a new patient's first two fills, then $349 (3 October 2026). Semaglutide sold online without a prescription is an unapproved product FDA warns against.

Can I buy semaglutide online?

Yes, with a prescription, filled by a state-licensed pharmacy. NovoCare Pharmacy, TrumpRx pharmacy coupons and Costco's mail order all list prices. FDA's advice is to fill a prescription only at a state-licensed pharmacy.

How much do semaglutide pills cost per month?

Self-pay, with a prescription, as of 3 October 2026: Wegovy pill $149 a month at 1.5 mg, $199 at 4 mg and $299 at 9 mg or 25 mg; Ozempic pill $149, $199 and $299 at 1.5, 4 and 9 mg. Costco and TrumpRx list the same prices.

How to get semaglutide for $25?

Only with commercial insurance that covers it. Novo's savings offers let eligible patients pay as little as $25 a month for Wegovy or Ozempic, with savings capped at $100 a month, and government beneficiaries are excluded.

Can I buy Ozempic online legally?

Yes, with a prescription from a licensed prescriber, filled by a state-licensed pharmacy. Novo's self-pay price for the Ozempic pen is $199 a month for a new patient's first two fills of 0.25 or 0.5 mg, then $349, or $499 for 2 mg.

Can I get Ozempic without seeing a doctor?

No. Ozempic needs a prescription, and FDA lists a seller that does not require a screening and prescription by a licensed doctor as a red flag.

Did Trump lower the price of Ozempic?

TrumpRx.gov, a US government site, lists the Ozempic pen at $199 a month for a new self-pay patient's first two fills, then $349, the same as Novo's own self-pay price. The list price insurers are billed is $1,027.51 per pen until Novo's announced $675 takes effect on 1 January 2027.

Where can I buy semaglutide?

Legally, only with a prescription. The legal routes I checked: Novo Nordisk self-pay (NovoCare Pharmacy and the brand sites); TrumpRx.gov pharmacy coupons; Costco Pharmacy member prices; With insurance or Medicare. The Wegovy pill (1.5 mg) costs $149 a month self-pay from Novo Nordisk (as of 3 October 2026). Research vendors also sell research-labelled semaglutide (Next Level Pharm and Spartan Peptides), labelled not for human use; it is not the approved medicine.

Is semaglutide for sale legally?

Only with a prescription. Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus are prescription medicines, and FDA tells patients to fill a prescription at a state-licensed pharmacy. This is general information, not legal advice.
