Buy Tesamorelin: Prescription Routes and Research Vials Compared

Checked, not rated · Updated 3 October 2026

You need a prescription to buy tesamorelin legally in the US. I found no published cash price for EGRIFTA; the maker's THERA programme supplies it free to qualifying patients (as of 3 October 2026).

Research vendors also sell research-labelled tesamorelin, which is not the approved medicine.

How to buy tesamorelin legally

US status: FDA-approved by prescription as EGRIFTA WR and EGRIFTA SV (Theratechnologies) for excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy, not for weight loss; a licensed biologic since 23 March 2020, so FDA says it cannot be compounded.

Prescription needed? Yes. EGRIFTA WR and SV are Rx only, and the manufacturer's THERA patient support sends each prescription to an in-network specialty pharmacy.

Why compounded tesamorelin is not a legal route: tesamorelin and the law.

EGRIFTA through THERA patient support

Legal route

The prescriber enrols you; THERA checks insurance and sends the prescription to an in-network specialty pharmacy that ships monthly. THERA Co-Pay Assistance covers commercially insured patients, but no manufacturer or pharmacy page I opened prints a cash price for EGRIFTA.

Clinics selling 'compounded tesamorelin'

Legal status unclear

Perfect B says a licensed pharmacy compounds its tesamorelin. FDA lists tesamorelin as a licensed biologic and says biologics are not eligible for the 503A and 503B compounding exemptions.

Compounding pharmacy

Not a legal route

No 503A or 503B pathway, because FDA treats tesamorelin as a licensed biological product. Tesamorelin is on neither FDA compounding categories list.

No published price on the pages I checked.

Prices come from each seller's, pharmacy's or manufacturer's own page on the date shown, and they change often. "Legal status unclear" means the sources conflict or FDA has not ruled. How prescribing online works: telehealth peptide prescribing.

Research-labelled tesamorelin (not the approved medicine)

A 'research use only' tesamorelin vial is not EGRIFTA: it carries the name without the approval, the indication or the licence. FDA named research-sold tesamorelin as an unapproved new drug in four warning letters dated 24 August 2026, to Peptide Partners, Peak Performance Peptides, Royal Peptides and NuScience Peptides. Each said research-only labels don't change that, and each cited the bacteriostatic water the seller offered as evidence the vials were meant for injection. As a biologic, tesamorelin also needs an approved licence before it can be marketed.

Compared with the approved medicine, a research vial has not been reviewed by FDA, is labelled not for human use, and is tested only as the seller chooses.

The checklist results come from my review of each vendor and cover the whole store. A vendor can publish COAs for some products and not others. The order is not a ranking.

What a research tesamorelin COA should show

A certificate of analysis (COA) is the lab report for one batch. For tesamorelin, check these:

  • Identity by mass spectrometry, with the expected and the measured mass side by side. For tesamorelin, expect about 5,136 Da (C221H366N72O67S).
  • Purity by HPLC for this batch, shown as a chromatogram as well as a percentage.
  • A lot number that matches your vial or pack, the test date and the lab's name, so you can confirm the certificate on the lab's own site.

A purity figure does not cover sterility or bacterial endotoxins; a COA covers those only if it reports separate tests for them. Line by line: how to read a peptide COA.

Red flags when buying research tesamorelin

  • A research vial presented as the approved medicine, or sold to you as a treatment.
  • No certificate of analysis for the batch you will receive, or one without a lot number or a named lab.
  • Dosing instructions or treatment claims for people on the product page.
  • An FDA warning letter naming the seller. Search fda.gov before you pay.
  • No way to pay with buyer protection, such as a credit card.

Common questions

Do I need a prescription for tesamorelin peptide?

Yes. Approved tesamorelin (EGRIFTA WR and EGRIFTA SV) is Rx only, for excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. FDA calls tesamorelin sold 'for research use only' an unapproved new drug.

Can I purchase tesamorelin?

Legally, only on a prescription. Brand EGRIFTA WR reaches patients through in-network specialty pharmacies arranged by the manufacturer's THERA patient support. Some clinics sell 'compounded tesamorelin' for cash (Perfect B from $445 per 3-month cycle), but FDA says licensed biologics such as tesamorelin are not eligible for compounding.

How much does a month of tesamorelin cost?

No manufacturer or pharmacy page I could open prints a cash price for brand EGRIFTA. Commercially insured patients may qualify for THERA Co-Pay Assistance, and qualifying patients can get it free through the THERA Patient Assistance Program. Clinic prices for compounded versions run from $285 per 'treatment' to $445 per 3-month cycle (3 October 2026).

Is EGRIFTA covered by insurance?

Each plan decides. The manufacturer's THERA programme checks your coverage, finds an in-network specialty pharmacy and applies co-pay assistance for private or commercial insurance; for government insurance it offers information on lowering costs.

Is EGRIFTA still available?

Yes. DailyMed carries current labels for EGRIFTA WR and EGRIFTA SV, both updated 29 July 2026, and Drugs@FDA lists EGRIFTA as a prescription product. The label says WR and SV are not substitutable.

Where can I buy tesamorelin?

Legally, only with a prescription. The legal routes I checked: EGRIFTA through THERA patient support. Legal status unclear: Clinics selling 'compounded tesamorelin'. Research vendors also sell research-labelled tesamorelin (Next Level Pharm, Spartan Peptides and BioEdge Research Labs), labelled not for human use; it is not the approved medicine.

Is tesamorelin for sale legally?

Only with a prescription. EGRIFTA WR and SV are Rx only, and the manufacturer's THERA patient support sends each prescription to an in-network specialty pharmacy. Clinics selling 'compounded tesamorelin': legal status unclear. Perfect B says a licensed pharmacy compounds its tesamorelin. FDA lists tesamorelin as a licensed biologic and says biologics are not eligible for the 503A and 503B compounding exemptions. Compounding pharmacy: No 503A or 503B pathway, because FDA treats tesamorelin as a licensed biological product. Tesamorelin is on neither FDA compounding categories list.
